Elise Roth - Vintage Jazz & Classical Vocalist
aBOUT
Vocalist Elise Margaret Roth grew up in London, listening to recordings of the Andrews Sisters, Artie Shaw, and Glenn Miller, never imagining that she'd come to be known as the “poster girl” for the vintage music and dance scene in New England. Thanks to her timeless look and lithe vocals, she is setting the standard among performers of Big Band and swing music.

Like many of her jazz forebears, Ms. Roth trained in the classical tradition and received her Masters in Music from New England Conservatory. A versatile vocalist who delights in performing art song and opera, it is truly in jazz where Elise has found the intersection of her passion for music, living history, and performance. As in her classical career, she revels in finding obscure tunes and reviving them for today’s listeners. Audiences who have seen her perform know that every detail is pitch-perfect, and her classic presentation is second only to her repertoire of music ranging from the 1920s Jazz Age through the 1950s. She is often compared vocally to Helen Forrest, Rosemary Clooney, and especially Judy Garland.

Most recently, she has been proud to debut her own band, Elise Roth & Her Harvard Squares at several dance events and vintage parties, and most notably at the Cicada Club in Downtown Los Angeles.

While living in Boston, Miss Roth was the featured vocalist for 6 years with Dan Gabel & the Abletones, an 18-piece authentic Big Band specializing in the music of the Swing era, and with the 1920s style High Society Orchestra. In addition, she featured with several popular dance bands on the Boston scene, notably Rocco and the Stompers and Phil McGowan and the Easy Winners. On Friday nights you could often find her lighting up the stage at Boston Swing Central, lending an authentic voice to these well-attended swing dances.

In addition, Elise has had the pleasure of performing with Christopher Calloway Brooks, the Four Freshmen, Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, and David Ostwald at Birdland in New York, and with Richard Halpern and the Blue Serenaders in Los Angeles. Ms. Roth has sung for two Massachusetts Governors, for events at WGBH, WICN, and ArtWeek Boston. She continues to delight audiences at vintage events, retirement communities, and charity functions throughout New England and beyond.
